It was established in October 2010 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (now [BMBFSFJ](https://www.bmbfsfj.bund.de/bmbfsfj/meta/en)) and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs ([KMK](https://www.kmk.org/en/index.html)). Through the close integration of ZIB working groups within their respective institutes, the centre benefits from disciplinary expertise and thus forms a strong, interdisciplinary research base. The work focuses on the PISA study in Germany as well as related research questions in the field of empirical educational research. This includes questions such as how students’ achievement can be measured in the best possible way and how the collected data can be processed and analysed to yield meaningful results. The FDZ collects data from national and international large-scale school achievement studies and makes them available to researchers. In addition, the FDZ regularly offers events to support the training and development of early-career researchers.
