This doctoral project is builds on the completed research project *‘Resources for learning in times of crisis’* (ReLeK). The aim is to identify both individual characteristics of young people that are associated with learning success in challenging situations and characteristics of resilient education systems.

Measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic have led to profound changes in teaching and learning – from distance and hybrid learning to quarantine regulations. Pupils, teachers, parents, and education policymakers had to adapt to these new conditions in a very short time.

The project investigates whether certain characteristics and skills facilitate or hinder learning in crisis situations. To this end, data from PISA 2018 (before the pandemic) are compared with data from PISA 2022 (during/after the pandemic). Profile analyses are used to identify risk groups and describe them in more detail on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics. The aim is to develop starting points for targeted interventions and support in future crises.

In a second step, the focus shifts to the resilience of entire countries and education systems. In view of the increase in social inequalities during the pandemic, the project analyses how educational inequalities have changed in the participating countries and which political, economic, and educational policy measures have been able to mitigate these developments. In this way, the project contributes to the question of how educational equity can be maintained even in times of crisis affecting society as a whole.
