In 2022, 2012 and 2003, mathematical literacy was the major domain of the PISA survey.

Definition

Mathematical literacy in the PISA study denotes the ability to interpret, formulate and work on problems on the basis of mathematical concepts. A given task is then solved using mathematical arguments.

Mathematical literacy also refers to mathematical reasoning. Mathematics is used to describe, explain and predict phenomena. Through mathematics, people are able to recognize and understand the role which it plays in the world. In addition, mathematical literacy teaches them to make informed judgements and decisions. This helps them deal constructively with the demands which present themselves in life of an engaged and reflective citizen.

Tasks

The tasks used in the PISA study focus primarily on the application of mathematical knowledge in various real-life contexts.

The tasks for assessing basic mathematical literacy are based on three dimensions:

Content

  • Quantities

  • Uncertainty and data

  • Change and relationships

  • Space and shape.

Context

  • Personal

  • Occupational

  • Public

  • Scientific.

Processes

  • Formulate

  • Apply

  • Interpret

  • Evaluate.
