The ZIB Institutes

ZIB's research projects are carried out by ZIB professorships and staff based at DIPF in Frankfurt am Main, IPN in Kiel, and TUM in Munich. Embedding ZIB’s research projects within these institutes and the resulting collaborations enable us to combine the wide range of expertise in educational research across all three locations. This creates an active research environment in which all ZIB sites contribute their specific areas of expertise.

TUM

Logo TUM

TUM is the main site of ZIB, which is closely affiliated with the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology. Activities focus on the PISA survey in Germany as well as related research questions in the field of empirical educational research. The ZIB professorship is held by Professor Samuel Greiff.

Institute

The TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology (SOT) pursues a broad, interdisciplinary approach which, amongst others, brings together the following fields:

  • Educational Sciences

  • Political Science and Governance

  • Social Sciences.

ZIB is, in particular, linked to the Department of Educational Sciences. The department’s programmes focus on teaching degrees and master’s programmes in the educational sciences.

Research activities in Munich focus primarily on the PISA study and related research. Overall, they may be categorized into the following areas:

  • Planning, implementation, and analysis of the PISA study in Germany, including independent analyses of research findings

  • Research relevant to educational practice and policy, in particular in the area of educational equity.

The ZIB research group at DIPF focuses on educational psychology assessments and large-scale assessments, along with the corresponding methodological research. The ZIB professorship is held by Professor Frank Goldhammer.

Institute

The Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education (DIPF) is a member of the Leibniz Association. ZIB is based at the Department of Teaching and Learning Quality (TTQ) and focuses on technology-based assessment.

DIPF operates the following platforms:

DIPF research on large-scale assessments focuses on measuring achievement in using technology-based applications. This includes, for instance, research on:

  • Results from computer-based assessments

  • Process data (e.g. response times) in computer-based assessments.

The ZIB research group at IPN focuses on methodological issues in large-scale assessments. This includes questions such as how students’ achievement can be measured in the best possible ways and how data can be processed and analysed to yield meaningful results. The ZIB professorship is held by Professor Oliver Lüdtke.

Institute

IPN analyses educational processes in mathematics, computer science, and the natural sciences from childhood to adulthood, both in school and in out-of-school contexts. In addition to its research activities, IPN also offers regular professional development courses to familiarize researchers beyond ZIB with new methodological developments.

IPN is, amongst others, active in the following areas:

  • Measurement of student achievement

  • Improvement of methods of measurement and analysis

  • Handling missing data in educational research

  • Further development and application of multilevel models

Statistical investigation of causal effects in large-scale assessments.

FDZ at IQB

The Research Data Centre (FDZ➚) is jointly headed by ZIB and the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB➚) and is based at IQB in Berlin. FDZ collects data from national and international school performance surveys and makes them available to researchers.

Institute

FDZ at IQB provides datasets from national and international school performance studies in Germany (e.g. PISA, IQB education trends) and offers programmes for young researchers as well as events for methodological training. These include the biannual FDZ Academies on methods of empirical educational research. In addition, FDZ strives to expand the research data infrastructure for empirical educational research in Germany.

FDZ supports ZIB’s research data infrastructure through the following activities:

  • Collecting scientific data

  • Providing data for further analyses.
